    Sports Prediction Markets

Where serious sports fans trade, not just bet

Over $34 million in sports prediction markets trade every day across NBA, World Cup, golf, and more. Unlike sportsbooks, you can sell your position anytime — locking in profit before the game even ends.

Where to Trade Sports Prediction Markets

The US sports prediction market landscape is split across three major exchange ecosystems. Here's who powers what.

Fee quick guide: Kalshi's fee varies by odds (max 1.75¢ at 50/50, near-zero for longshots). Robinhood/Coinbase/Webull charge a flat $0.02/contract ($0.01 RH + $0.01 Kalshi) via Kalshi. DraftKings charges ~$0.01/contract/side + exchange fees (~$0.02+ round-trip) via CME. FanDuel takes 2% of your potential payout. Polymarket US charges a probability-based taker fee (sports: up to 0.75% at 50¢ at 50/50, near-zero for heavy favorites). CDNA-powered apps (Fanatics, Underdog, OG) vary by partner.

How Sports Prediction Markets Differ from Sportsbooks

If you've used DraftKings Sportsbook or FanDuel Sportsbook, prediction markets will feel familiar but work differently. Instead of fixed odds set by a house, you trade contracts on an exchange against other users. There is no bookmaker taking the other side — every buyer is matched with a seller.

    Concrete Example

If the Celtics are trading at 22¢ on Kalshi, the market gives them a 22% chance of winning the NBA title. On a sportsbook, the equivalent would be roughly +355 moneyline. But here's the difference: if the Celtics win their first playoff series and the price moves to 35¢, you can sell for a 59% profit immediately — no need to wait for the Finals.

    FeaturePrediction MarketsSportsbooks
    PricingMarket-set (0–100¢)House-set odds

Max payout$1 per contractVaries (limits common)
    RegulationCFTC (federal)State gaming commissions

The bottom line: prediction markets turn sports opinions into tradeable financial positions. You're not placing a bet with a house — you're trading a contract on an exchange. This means better price transparency, no vig, and the ability to manage your risk actively.

Three Infrastructure Ecosystems Power US Sports Prediction Markets

Kalshi ecosystem: Kalshi (CFTC DCM, most states) powers Robinhood, Coinbase, and PrizePicks, among others. Broadest category coverage.

CME Group ecosystem: CME Group powers DraftKings Predictions and FanDuel Predicts. Both target states without legal sports betting.

Crypto.com CDNA ecosystem: Crypto.com Derivatives North America (CFTC DCM) powers Fanatics Markets (24 states) and others including Underdog Predict (33 states + DC) and OG Predictions.

Independent: Polymarket US (sports-only, invite-only), Novig (sports-only, sweepstakes model, DCM pending), Sporttrade (state-licensed, 5 states).

    Spotlight: Sporttrade

Sporttrade is a sports-only exchange currently operating under state gaming licenses (5 states) while its CFTC DCM application remains pending. Unlike Kalshi (CFTC DCM, 50-state federal reach, covering politics/economics/weather too) or DraftKings Predictions (CME-powered event contracts), Sporttrade trades on state-level infrastructure today and would only become a full federal DCM if the CFTC approves its application. Minimum trade is just 10¢, making it the most accessible entry point for sports fans who want to try the exchange model without committing serious capital.

Available in select US states. Check Sporttrade for current availability.

How to Start Trading Sports Markets

    1

    Choose a Platform

For US sports fans, Kalshi, Robinhood, and Sporttrade are the easiest starting points — all accept USD bank deposits and require no crypto. DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics, and Underdog also offer prediction markets if you already have accounts.

    2

    Read the Contract Terms

Every contract has specific settlement rules. “Celtics Win NBA Championship” settles based on the final result. Read the fine print — especially for conditional markets like “Will X player win MVP?” where the criteria may surprise you.

    3

    Start Small, Learn the Mechanics

Buy a few contracts at $1–$5 to learn how the order book works. Practice selling before settlement to understand how exiting a position works. Most sports bettors underestimate the value of the “sell anytime” feature.

    4

    Compare Prices Across Platforms

Different platforms often have different prices for the same outcome. If Kalshi has the Celtics at 22¢ and Polymarket has them at 24¢, that 2¢ spread tells you something about market disagreement — and may represent an opportunity.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are sports prediction markets legal in the US?
Yes. Multiple CFTC-regulated platforms offer legal sports event contracts. Kalshi (most states) powers sports markets on Robinhood, Coinbase, and PrizePicks, among others. CME Group powers DraftKings Predictions and FanDuel Predicts. Crypto.com CDNA powers Fanatics Markets, Underdog Predict, and OG Predictions. Polymarket US offers sports markets (invite-only) via QCX LLC. Novig and Sporttrade are independent sports-focused platforms. These are classified as event contracts under federal derivatives regulation, not traditional sports bets under state gambling laws.
How are sports prediction markets different from sportsbooks?
Prediction markets let you buy and sell contracts that pay $1 if an outcome happens and $0 if it doesn't. Prices represent implied probability (65 cents = 65% chance). Unlike sportsbooks, you can exit your position at any time before the event settles, locking in profit or cutting losses. There is no vig or juice — you trade at market prices set by other traders.
What sports can I trade on Kalshi?
Kalshi offers event contracts on NBA outcomes (game winners, series winners, MVP awards), NFL markets (Super Bowl, playoff outcomes), NCAA tournament markets, golf majors (Masters, PGA Championship), and select international events like the FIFA World Cup. Available markets change throughout the season.
Is this like DraftKings or FanDuel?
Not exactly. DraftKings and FanDuel offer both traditional sportsbook betting and prediction market contracts. Their prediction market products (DraftKings Predictions, FanDuel Predicts) route through CME Group and work similarly to Kalshi — binary contracts that pay $1 or $0. However, their sportsbook products use fixed odds and you cannot sell your bet early. Prediction markets are exchange-based, meaning you trade against other users. Similarly, Fanatics Markets and Underdog Predict route through Crypto.com CDNA.
